A Message from Eric

Some time back I sent an e-mail to you expressing my excitement in painting plein-air (on site). Earlier in my career I had found that unsatisfying. Yet, I had taken a new interest in this; my paintings were showing renewed excitement, and I enjoyed the change. However, recently I find I have missed the conceptual aspect of choosing my own color harmonies and design plan rather than painting it “as is.” By sketching from life on location, using just a soft graphite pencil, I capture the essence of my subject and then reconstruct it back in my studio. This simple step frees up my thinking tremendously, and I can focus on expressing my own design. It keeps me from being  distracted by the image in front of me – real or photographed.

By no means do I intend to forgo plein-air painting, as this will always be part of my oeuvre for inspiration and refreshment. I find my paintings benefit greatly when I allow myself free reign of my design sense.
