A scene of a sunny summer afternoon in the country.

When I painted this scene I wanted to use strong desert colors and try and capture the rich red orange textures of the desert floor contrasting with the beautiful greens of the bushes.
Snow Canyon Vista

The warmth of the magical New Mexico landscape. It is that color of burnt land that I tried to capture... a sort of Quin Burnt Orange with Opera pink, dotted with green junipers.
Pedernal near Ghost Ranch

This was a picture taken on a road that gave me such a feeling of peace and seclusion, which I feel I captured in this painting. The light and shadow by the fence caught my eye, which became my area of dominance.

Painting of the Cortez boatyard quick brushstrokes trying to express the sense of place while using color some of which are not expected while keeping the values . This was an assignment from Eric's mentoring class in winter of 2025.
Dry Dock
Diane Klock
Litchfield , Connecticut
16″ x 12″

This floral relies on outside edges to define its ragged shapes. Soft edges capture the melted colors inside the bouquet, while the hard edges and shadows on the white daisies capture an area of interest for the viewer.
Summer Bouquet

I used cobalt and ultramarine blues for my sky and background, so right away this painting differs from Wyeth’s earth colors and conveys a brighter feeling. For the peonies I used mostly alizarin crimson with touches of blue for the shaded areas and a dash of cadmium red in the center of the red flower, which for me is the area of dominance. The background landscape is painted fairly flat in shades of blue while the darkest blue of the window frames the scene. The wide flat windowsill is left a very light blue to suggest strong sunlight.

I like how the yellows, and splashes of reds, in the abstracted foliage play off the darks of the background evergreens. The foliage also serves to break the strong verticals of the light tree trunks.
Autumn Roadside Attraction
John Miller

The intense colors of the south west mesas in New Mexico are so inspiring. Using a flat brush and minimum colors I swept across my paper to give my impression of the geometric shapes I saw.
New Mexico Mesa Sunrise
Diana Aurigemma
Seattle, WA

I attempted to capture the abstract qualities of the scene--the contrasts and composition--as well as the gloominess and activity. The background is painted primarily with a very loose pour and scrape technique reserving most of the simple brushstrokes for the foreground elements.

Balsamroot flowers in foreground, loose impressions of sagebrush and flowers in midground, and tall mountains on the distant horizon.
Teton Solstice

I simplified the background near the flowers and used a limited palette to express a harmony and the soft feeling of my discovery. I used saved some whites and used some Chinese white to enhance the flowers.
A Day for Daisies

Cool colors in the foreground with warm colors in the distance.

This painting captures the evening light shining on the steep terrain above the river in Leavenworth, WA. The rafters catch the viewer’s eye as they float down the river.

A colorful watercolor painting depicting the Arago headland with waves coming on shore. I used red, blue yellow and burnt sienna to give pleasing colors to this somewhat abstract painting.

The painting shows the different crops of wheat, canola, and peas as they change colors before harvest. The day was sunny and warm.
Walla Walla Fields
Kay Wessel
Walla Walla, WA

In this watercolor painting I focused on color and expressive brushstrokes to evoke the feeling of the warmth of the sun's glow just before it sets. Also, I explored washes in the clouds and the reflections on a stream flowing out with the tide. Two people and their car are shown enjoying the experience. This painting was done after listening and learning from looking at Eric's paintings in class.
